One fine day late in the 14th century, on the banks of the Malacca river mouth, the water rippled turbulently. Usually, it heralded the arrival of a ship into port, and at first the Shahbandar continued working in his office, barely looking down the hill towards sea. Then the hubbub of the famous entrepôt suddenly hushed as a huge armada appeared on the horizon. Large ships darkened the line where the straits of Malacca sea met the sky, and the Shahbandar stood up, agape at the sight before his eyes as far as he could see. 

A dinghy rowed towards the jetty, carrying an imposing man who stood upright, his armour glistening in the sun. His demeanor was one of firm resolve, yet open. The wind carried his scent to the waiting crowd, an unmistakeable fragrance of imposing power. He was Admiral Zheng He, the envoy of the Emperor of China sent to Malacca to meet the Sultan. Admiral Zheng He and his entourage were received warmly by the Sultan who welcomed diplomatic ties with the great power that is China. This is the beginning of close ties between two nations that has continued for centuries until today.
