Teluk Pauh

Facing the Malayo Sea, off the coast of Terengganu is Pulau Perhentian Besar, where Teluk Pauh (or Mango Bay) has provided shelter to fishermen and fish from the tempestuous monsoon since time immemorial. Underwater, the corals provide a safe haven for fish to lay eggs and their young, and usually when the monsoon season subsides the eggs hatch and the fishes grow, swimming and teeming in a hide-and-seek game among the sea anemones. Turtles glide by in a sleepy haze, while the timid black tip sharks let their young wander among their would-be meals.

Above the shimmering crystal clear turquoise waters on the shoreline, a sparkling white crescent of sandy beach and dried corals hug the sea in a warm embrace. Here, under clear skies quiet resorts stand respectfully in the presence of the ocean’s beauty. Under one of the swaying palm trees, you could order a mocktail aptly named ‘Teluk Pauh’ — a heavenly concoction of mangoes, bananas, coconut milk, and rose syrup. Sipping on this local creation, one could sit by the beach and take in the near silence of Teluk Pauh broken only by the constant lapping of the waves and rustling palm leaves above. The gentle lull becomes a balm for weary souls taking refuge from the busyness of the world.
